I admit it – I have a thing for chicken wings. I like them deep-fried and saucy. Apparently they think highly of me too because when I eat them, they like to stick around and hang out on my thighs.
I have attempted over the years to come off with knock-off versions that do not require deep or pan frying, but the results have left me less than satisfied. That is until this weekend. This weekend I finally cracked the chicken wing code and came up with a great oven “fried” version…. and I am going to let you in on it.
Turns out the secret to amazing oven-fried chicken is to ditch the flour and use corn starch. Who knew? In addition to the cornstarch I added paprika for color, garlic salt for flavor and a little non-stick cooking spray to get the whole “oven-fried” process started. Then you just bake until chicken is cooked and the crust is a crispy golden brown. As easy as that you have the perfect almost-fried chicken wings.
These wings are great as is or you can add a sauce. (Personally, I am partial to drizzling them with some spicy buffalo sauce.) They also great with a side of Sweet Potato Oven Fries. Give the Ultimate Almost-Fried Chicken Wings a try and let me know know what you think.
The Ultimate Almost-Fried Chicken Wings
Prep time: 8 minutes – Cook time: 30 minutes – Makes: about 4 servings
- 3 lbs chicken wings (with skin on)
- 1 cup corn starch
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
- non-stick cooking spray
Preheat oven 400º. Use spray two baking sheets with non-stick cooking spray and set aside until ready to use.
Place corn starch, paprika and garlic starch in a medium sized bowl and toss together with a fork until well mixed.
Add a chicken wing toss in the corn starch mixture. Tap to on the bowl to remove excess and place on the baking sheet. Repeat with the rest of the wings one at a time. Place chicken wings on baking sheets so that they are not touching.
Spray chicken wings lightly on both sides with non-stick cooking spray.
Bake chicken wings for 15 minutes and flip wings over. Bake for an additional 15-17 minutes or until fully cooked.
